Keeping communication, collaboration and continuous improvement at the heart of major infrastructure delivery
Ivor King was pleased to attend the recent SCS Supply Chain Forum and Feedback Session in London, bringing together representatives from across the supply chain supporting the delivery of HS2.
The event, hosted by the Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV), provided an opportunity for the supply chain to hear the latest updates on progress across the various HS2 schemes, discuss key delivery milestones and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities still to come.
With HS2 representing one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects, maintaining effective communication between the client, principal contractors, specialist contractors and wider supply chain is essential.
Sharing progress and looking ahead
The forum featured a number of speakers from SCS, who provided updates on progress across the programme, as well as introducing new initiatives and outlining expectations for the supply chain as delivery continues.
As well as looking at what has already been achieved, the session provided an opportunity to consider how the industry can continue to improve the way major projects are delivered.
Representatives from across the supply chain were able to share their experiences, provide feedback and discuss some of the common themes affecting delivery.
For projects of this scale and complexity, those conversations are particularly valuable. Different organisations bring different experiences and perspectives, and creating opportunities to share those openly can help identify areas where processes, communication and collaboration can be improved.
Ivor King’s role in HS2 delivery
Ivor King has been involved in various elements of HS2 delivery, providing specialist sheet piling solutions to support a number of schemes and construction activities along the route.
Our work has included sheet piling for both temporary and permanent works, with solutions selected to meet the particular requirements of individual projects.
Sheet piling can play an important role in enabling construction, from providing temporary retaining structures and working platforms through to forming permanent structures that remain as part of the finished scheme.
As a specialist piling contractor and sheet pile supplier, our involvement in HS2 has given us the opportunity to work alongside a wide range of organisations and project teams, contributing our specialist knowledge and experience to different stages of delivery.
The importance of the supply chain
A project as large as HS2 relies on the combined expertise of a vast and diverse supply chain.
From major construction contractors and specialist subcontractors to manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and logistics providers, successful delivery depends on organisations working together effectively.
Events such as the SCS Supply Chain Forum provide an important opportunity to step away from the day-to-day demands of individual projects and look at the bigger picture.
They allow the supply chain to understand the wider direction of the programme, hear directly from those responsible for its delivery, and provide constructive feedback based on experiences from across the various schemes.
Just as importantly, they provide an opportunity to build and maintain relationships.
Communication is key
On a project of this scale, keeping the lines of communication open is vital.
Construction programmes are complex, with multiple organisations working alongside each other, often across different locations and disciplines. Challenges are inevitable, but effective communication can help ensure that issues are identified early, information is shared and solutions are developed collaboratively.
The forum reinforced the importance of maintaining those connections as HS2 progresses.
For Ivor King, being part of these conversations is about more than simply delivering our own scope of work. It is about understanding the wider project, listening to the experiences of others and working collaboratively to help achieve the best possible outcomes.
Looking ahead
There is still a significant amount of work ahead as HS2 continues to progress, and the supply chain will have an important role to play in delivering the next stages of the programme.
