Taking Time to Pause: Supporting Mental Wellbeing at Ivor King

World Mental Health Day, held on 10 October each year, provides an opportunity to think about our mental health and the small, practical things we can all do to support our own wellbeing and that of the people around us.

This week, colleagues at Ivor King took some time away from the usual demands of the working day to do just that, with a lunchtime meditation session at IKHQ hosted by Jake.

The session provided an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, slow things down and focus on being present. Through breathing exercises and simple meditation techniques, colleagues were encouraged to let go of some of the mental pressures that can build up during a busy working day.

Sometimes, simply having the opportunity to stop for a few minutes can make a difference.

Making time for wellbeing

Working in the construction industry can be demanding, with busy sites, deadlines, changing priorities and plenty to think about. Looking after physical safety is rightly a fundamental part of what we do, but mental wellbeing is equally important.

That doesn’t necessarily mean making big changes. Small, consistent habits can help us manage stress and maintain a healthier balance.

Taking a short walk, getting some fresh air, stretching or simply stepping away from a screen for a few minutes can provide a useful break during the day. Making time for proper rest and sleep, eating well and staying hydrated can also contribute to feeling better both physically and mentally.

Mindfulness and breathing exercises, like those explored during our session at IKHQ, can be another simple way of creating a little space when things feel busy.

Looking out for each other

MHFA FIRST AIDERS

Good mental health isn’t just about what we do individually. It’s also about creating a workplace where people feel able to talk, ask for help and look out for their colleagues.

At Ivor King, we have a team of trained Mental Health First Aiders across the business. They are there to provide a listening ear, offer initial support and help colleagues find appropriate sources of further help when they need it.

Sometimes, a simple conversation or asking someone how they are doing can be an important first step.

We also recognise that everyone is different. What helps one person switch off or manage a difficult day might not work for someone else. Whether it’s getting outside, spending time with family and friends, enjoying a hobby, listening to music or simply taking some time away from phones and screens, finding things that help us recharge is important.

A healthy mind is part of a safe workplace

World Mental Health Day is a useful annual reminder, but supporting mental wellbeing shouldn’t be limited to one day of the year.

For us, it’s part of creating a workplace where people are supported, where conversations about mental health are normalised and where colleagues know that help is available.

Our meditation session at IKHQ was a small but positive opportunity to pause, breathe and reset during the working day – and a reminder that sometimes taking a little time for ourselves is time well spent.
