Key Benefits & Advantages

Noise and vibration free – ideal solution in environmentally sensitive areas such as deep basement constructions

Ability to work remotely from access roads where there is restricted access

Ideal for use over water

Suits both cohesive and granular soils

Effective reduction of 'toe' resistance allows the piles to be pressed-in with minimum soil disturbance and limited soil removal

Digital reporting to monitor energy and overall project efficiency

Environmentally friendly – advanced diesel power unit conforming to exhaust emission standard EEC97 / 68E

Ivor King are industry leaders in the use of Giken Supercrush Silent Piling technology – a further development of the vibration-free piling process, utilising an integral rock auger housed inside a casing to penetrate hard ground.

The press-in action is carried out while simultaneously augering the ground immediately ahead of the sheet pile. This technique enables silent piling into hard or challenging ground, up to and including rock, and allows sheet piles to be designed to take significant vertical loads.

This technology uses the unique concept of ‘Coring Theory’ whereby the hydraulic press-in simultaneously takes place with augering. This makes sheet pile installation possible in very hard ground conditions, enabling the vibration-free installation of sheet piles in otherwise impossible conditions.

This method allows silent/vibration-free pile installation in both cohesive and cohesionless soils, with SPT values from N = 0 – 100+ and hard rock with UCS results up to 90MPa.

How does GIKEN Supercrush differ from standard press-in piling? caret-down

Standard press-in piling uses hydraulic force to push sheet piles into the ground. Supercrush adds an integral rock auger housed within a casing, which works immediately ahead of the pile as it is pressed in. This reduces resistance at the pile toe and extends the press-in method to harder ground where additional penetration assistance is needed.

Can Supercrush install sheet piles into hard ground or rock? caret-down

Supercrush is designed to assist sheet pile installation in hard or challenging ground, including suitable rock conditions. It can be used in both cohesive and granular soils. Suitability depends on the ground profile, rock properties, pile specification and required depth, so the ground investigation must be reviewed before confirming the installation method and equipment.

Does Supercrush remove the need to investigate buried obstructions? caret-down

No. Auger assistance can help with challenging ground, but it does not mean every buried obstruction can be passed safely or without additional work. Information about existing foundations, buried services and other obstructions remains important. Ivor King reviews the available site information to assess whether Supercrush is appropriate and whether further investigation or preparatory work is needed.

Is Supercrush suitable near homes or other noise-sensitive buildings? caret-down

Supercrush can be considered where reducing pile-driving noise and vibration is important, including near residential properties and basement works. It combines hydraulic pressing with augering instead of conventional impact or vibratory driving. Supporting plant and site activities still generate noise, and the working method must account for nearby structures, ground conditions and the project’s specific constraints.

Can Supercrush be used over water or on restricted-access sites? caret-down

Yes, where the site and piling arrangement are suitable. GIKEN equipment can work remotely from access roads and is used for installations over water or where working space is limited. The initial setup, pile deliveries and supporting equipment still require planning. Ivor King assesses these practical requirements alongside the ground conditions before recommending the system.

What information is needed to assess Supercrush for a project? caret-down

Useful information includes the ground investigation and any rock testing, proposed pile line, sheet pile sections and required depths. Details of buried services, known obstructions, nearby structures, access and the construction programme also help. Where piles must carry vertical loads as well as retain ground, share those requirements so they can be considered in the design.
