The main purpose of a sheet pile cofferdam is to exclude water and/or soil from an area, providing a safe enclosure within an excavation for construction work to take place.

Cofferdams can be used for either permanent or temporary works and play a crucial role in the safe construction of underground tanks, drainage, and structures built in water, such as bridge supports, piers and abutments.

Cofferdams form a continuous retaining wall using interlocking steel sheet piles that can withstand significant forces. In shallow excavations with stable soils, cofferdams can be self-supporting, or cantilever, and rely on the embedded depth of the sheet piles to resist inward forces. In deeper excavations, or unstable soil conditions, additional support is required in the form of waling beams, internal braces and external anchors, to ensure stability of the structure.

A sustainable, robust and versatile solution

Ivor King maintain stocks of up to 3000 tonnes of steel sheet piles for use in temporary cofferdams. Often used for temporary works with excavations of between 3 and 6 metres below ground level, sheet piles will be installed and if applicable, internally braced with temporary hydraulic propping. This propping can either be formed of structural steel, fabricated and installed on site, or a proprietary framing system can be supplied.

Additionally, clutch sealants (WADIT®) and other waterproofing details can be used to make the structure watertight, whether temporary or permanent in nature.

Upon completion of the works, the steel sheet piles can be extracted and returned to our central hub to be cleaned and recycled back into our stock for future use.

What is a sheet pile cofferdam used for? caret-down

A sheet pile cofferdam forms an enclosure that holds back soil and controls water so construction can take place within an excavation. Typical uses include underground tanks, drainage works, bridge supports, piers and abutments. Interlocking steel sheet piles form the wall, with the support and water-control arrangements designed for the ground conditions and the work inside.

Are cofferdams temporary or permanent? caret-down

They can be either. A temporary cofferdam supports construction and is removed once the permanent works and site conditions allow. In other schemes, the sheet piles remain as part of the permanent structure. The intended use and duration influence the design, pile specification and the arrangements for installation and, where required, extraction.

Does every sheet pile cofferdam need internal bracing? caret-down

No. Some shallow cofferdams in suitable ground can be designed as cantilever walls, relying on the embedded length of the piles for support. Deeper excavations or more demanding ground and loading conditions may need waling beams, internal props or anchors. The designer determines the support arrangement and the stages at which it must be installed.

How is water controlled inside a sheet pile cofferdam? caret-down

The sheet pile wall limits water entering the enclosure, and clutch sealants such as WADIT can improve the water resistance of the interlocking joints. The design must also consider groundwater and possible seepage beneath the wall, together with any pumping requirements. A dry working area depends on the complete water-control arrangement, not just the sheet piles.

Can the sheet piles be reused after a temporary cofferdam is removed? caret-down

Yes. Once the works are complete and extraction is permitted by the agreed sequence, temporary sheet piles can be removed, cleaned and returned to stock for future projects. Reuse depends on their condition and suitability for the next scheme. Ivor King provides design, supply, installation and extraction as part of its cofferdam service.

What information is needed to design a cofferdam? caret-down

The design team needs the proposed excavation depth and layout, ground investigation and water levels, together with details of nearby structures and loads. Access, working space, the construction programme and whether the piles will be temporary or permanent also matter. These details help determine the enclosure shape, pile lengths, support system and installation sequence.
