The Challenge from the Client

Install a retaining wall for Interserve’s new Head Office development situated close to Birmingham Airport and adjacent to a railway line. The sheet piled wall must retain the railway embankment and enable a car park to be constructed. Vibration from the installation process must not be allowed to affect the nearby railway line.

The Ivor King Solution

A leader rig fitted with a variable vibration hammer was used for the pile installation. A pre-auger process was carried out to loosen the soil at the pile clutch locations, thereby reducing the driving force required and maintaining the vibration well below the limits set by Network Rail.
