The Challenge from the Client

The brownfield site in Greenwich had been cleared ready for construction. Foundation works for the electrical transformers was carried out prior to the sheet pile construction. The tight confines of the site and adjacent primary school restricted the type of equipment that could be used. Ground conditions consisted of very weak silty peaty clay overlying sand and gravel. The ground water table was only 3.0m below ground level.

The Ivor King Solution

A Giken pile walker was used to install the 13m long sheet piled cofferdam. This was serviced by a 70t crawler crane. Careful coordination of the sheet pile deliveries was required in order to maintain production whilst working within the limited confines of this urban site.

Additional resources were mobilised to site, helping the client to gain time on the challenging overall construction programme for the substation.
